JOHN BRACK Back and Fronts

From his much loved and magisterial 1969 Ballroom Dancer series, this painting was last sold at the very pinnacle of the 2007 art boom for a little over $2.1m. At its current estimate of $1.4-1.8 million in our March 21 sale, it is a very tangible reminder of the good ol’ days of the art market. Also, it’s a steal. The Ballroom series are amongst the largest and most important works by Melbourne’s best painter. Although he retired in the early 1990’s his reputation has continued to grow and following the highly successful Retrospective held in 2009 and the private sale of his The Bar for reportedly more than $5m, he can arguably be regarded as the city’s number one painter.
