Fred Williams took a trip to Tibooburra, north of Broken Hill, from 15 October - 8 November 1967 with fellow artist and friend Clifton Pugh (1924-1990). Williams was struck by the brilliant red hue of the inland dirt, divided from the vast blue sky by the flat horizon line. The trip resulted in a number of gouaches, including the present work.
