There are several variations in the artist\x92s name. The differences probably depend upon his location at the time a painting was completed. The present painting is signed SCHOUKHAEFF, but his name is recorded also as SCHUCHAJEFF, SUCHAEV, SHUKHAEV, SHOUKHAIEV, and CHOUHAIEFF etc. To add a further complication his first name is spelled variously Vasilij, Vassily, Wassily and Basil. In addition to the present spelling, the artist is most likely nowadays to be found under the spelling VASILIJ IVANOVIC SUCHAEV.
